Remember Catherine? We talked to her about her tote bag a few months ago. Well, since then, she moved away from the tote style to embrace this year big bag trend: the backpack.
They used to be all about practical, nothing fashion. But today you can find beautiful, feminine backpacks pretty much everywhere! True to myself, I wanted to talk to somebody who jumped on the wagon in her everyday life. If you want to see a honest opinion on switching your regular everyday purse to a backpack, keep on reading!
As I said earlier, fashion backpacks are everywhere now. And it is AWESOME for 2 main reasons: there is nothing more practical than a backpack (it fits a lot, you don’t hurt your back even when you pack them full…) and you can now look great wearing one (love you Herschel’s backpacks, but you’re not very feminine…). Completely convinced, Catherine was looking to replace here Danier tote bag with one.
Her criteria were: cute but not too out there (good for everyday, including for work), not too expensive (backpacks are everywhere in stores but still not quite as usual as a regular tote or crossbody bag. She didn’t want to invest too much money in case she didn’t like it as much as she thought) and big enough to fit her essentials and her lunch.
She found THE ONE last August at Zara (we’ll take about Zara handbags later on the blog!). Perfect size, black, simple but modern shape and a real bargain (around $40). Deal!
Experience and Recommendation
Quality: on this point, Catherine is half-happy, half-disappointed. The faux-leather is very good quality: she used the bag almost everyday since she bought it and there is almost no scratch or any sign of wear. No color transfer either. However, the magnet broke a few days ago (6 months after she bought it). As the string under the flap doesn’t really stay tight on its own, the bag is wide open all the time. Basically, she cannot use her backpack anymore. Shame!
Style: choosing a black backpack was definitely a good choice. It goes with everything and makes the bag look a bit less casual (which is good for work!). Now that she thinks about it (and wore the bag for a few months), she would prefer a backpack with a zipper closure (instead of a string and a flap) as it is safer. A small exterior pocket would also be great to keep her phone and keys within easy reach. Finally, she loved the small handle at the top. Super practical to quickly grab the bag!
Size: you can find all kind of backpack sizes in stores nowadays. Keep in mind that we are talking about one that would replace your everyday purse. It shouldn’t just be cute and fashion. It should fit all your essentials too! Catherine didn’t need to fit her laptop in her bag but she wanted to be able to fit her iPad and a sweater or a spare pair of flats for instance. This Zara one was the perfect size for this.
So, at the end, Catherine would not recommend this particular backpack if your intention is to use it every single day as hers broke after a few months of doing so. BUT, she definitely recommend buying a backpack in general. She just regrets not investing in a better quality one from the beginning because she is now planning on buying a new one and, at the end, it will cost her more money. I think that what you have to keep in mind is that you are trying to replace your everyday tote/satchel/crossbody bag. Why would you go for less quality only because it is a backpack? Go for the same price range as what you usually pay for a regular bag.
