Last week I went on a short business trip. One night away and straight back home. While I was packing my carry-on, I thought that it might be a good opportunity to do a What’s in my bag/carry-on edition and share a few packing tips along the way… Hope you’ll enjoy it!

Tip #1: minis!
First, you’re limited to 100mL containers if you take the plane and only take a carry-on with you. So… not much choice here! Second, why would you bring all your full-size products with you for just one night (or maybe even a few)? It will make your bag heavier without any good reason… I’m not saying that I don’t bring full size products with me at all. Just that, if I have options, I will replace some with a mini alternative.
I subscribe to Topbox so I receive a lot of minis every month. I also love to look at limited edition kits (from Sephora, pharmacies… you can find them everywhere) during the holiday season and keep the minis for later trips.

Tip #2: packing cubes
I was pretty late to the game on this one and I only got some for my trip to Cuba sooner this year. I’ve read about packing cubes everywhere but I didn’t see the point. Then, packing for Cuba, we decided to only bring one suitcase. The packing cubes seemed like a good way to separate my clothes from Mister’s and stay a little organized (which is usually not my forte). And let me tell you that they definitely were a good idea!
I’m not one to roll my clothes into packing cubes to be able to bring an extra t-shirt with me (I’m sure you’ve already see that tip before). But I LOVE how they help me stay organized by separating all my things. For instance, for my last week’s trip, I used one medium packing cube for my clothes and a small one for my work shoes (I only travel in sneakers with a thick pair of socks – planes get cold! – which is why I needed an extra pair). This way, I avoided stains from the shoe soles on my clothes (without having to put them in a plastic bag) and didn’t have clothes all over the bag when I needed them (you know when you empty your whole bag in order to find the one piece you’re looking for because it’s always hiding behind everything else…).
If you’re interested, my packing cubes are Eagle Creek. No complain so far!

Tip #3: layers
As mentioned above, planes get cold! Freezing even! So, when I travel, I always bring layers with me. Easy to put on (to remove them quickly once you’re off the plane but also to go through security faster) + not easily creased layers. Think zipped sweater and big scarf.
Heaven!
For longer flight I always bring an extra pair of thick socks with me but for short ones I’m okay with just wearing sneakers.

what's in my carry-on bag luggage

Finally, one last question when packing for a very short trip: what type of luggage should I use? Hard-shell suitcase or smaller bag? The first option is definitely more practical (wheels please!) but it can seem too big for just one night. One the other hand, a smaller bag is just the right size but you have to carry it on the shoulder all the time.
One this specific trip I used my Converse bag because one wheel of my suitcase is broken. It was okay but between this bag, my purse and my laptop case… it was definitely not the best option! Even for one night, I would advise to take your suitcase if you have one.
